Strengthening and Retrofitting Measures of a Calibrated Structure Model using Static Non-Linear Analysis

The behavior of reinforced concrete with large strain under dynamic loading is non-linear. The non-linear modeling of the reality exactly is much difficult due to a lot of boundary conditions and limited resources. However, the engineering requirement of solutions is somehow relaxed. i.e. it only needs to be within certain limits of errors. This paper presents the interpretation of the structural system in view of earthquake resistance design (ERD). An analysis of the structural system is performed using the software ETABS Nonlinear for the given building layout (a) with and (b) without, masonry infill walls. Experimental recordings are used to calibrate the numerical model. Plastic hinges are assigned as FEMA 273 specification. Based on the formation and location of plastic hinges the strengthening and retrofitting measures are proposed.
